Introduction to Moving Water – 1 Day Course

This one-day course is designed specifically for Scouts, Explorer Scouts, and Network members who are looking to develop their paddling skills further and take their first steps into moving water environments.

The event offers a challenging and rewarding experience for both experienced Scouts and Leaders. It is intended as an introduction to paddling on moving water, delivered with a high level of expert coaching and supervision to ensure both safety and progression. Participants will be supported throughout the day as they begin to understand river features, flow, and the additional skills required when paddling on rivers.

This course is suitable for those who have completed their Explorer Award or an equivalent level of training, as well as competent and confident paddlers who are comfortable on flat water and are keen to push their abilities further. It is ideal for individuals with a strong sense of adventure who are ready to begin exploring whitewater in a controlled and supportive environment.

During the course, we will aim to paddle on some of the best rivers in Wales, making use of the excellent opportunities available in the region. River choice will depend on water levels, weather conditions, and access permissions at the time, ensuring that the most appropriate and enjoyable experience is provided for the group.

We will be meeting in the Llangollen area, which provides a central base for accessing a variety of suitable rivers.

Participants should be aware that conditions at this time of year can be very cold. It is essential that all paddlers come equipped with appropriate clothing and equipment suitable for cold water paddling. This may include thermal layers, waterproofs, and any specialist paddling kit required to remain safe and comfortable throughout the day.

Due to the nature of the activity and the need to maintain high safety standards and effective coaching ratios, numbers on this event are strictly limited. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, and early booking is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment.

The cost of the course is £65 per participant.
